Football Pays the Penalty!

Posted by adminNo CommentsApr 18, 2011

It was a big weekend in football and penalty kicks for many reasons. There was a Manchester derby in London, which saw City defeat United 1-0 in the FA Cup semi-final and set up a FA Cup Final date with Stoke, who dismissed Bolton 5-0. There was a crucial game in the Premiership between Arsenal and Liverpool which ended in a dramatic 1-1 draw with two injury time penalties, with Dirk Kuyt scoring from the spot in the 102nd minute to put a serious dent in Arsenal’s title hopes. It also saw the latest installment of El Clasico in Madrid as Barcelona took on Real Madrid

A late penalty from Cristiano Ronaldo earned Real madrid a draw in the Bernabeu after Lionel Messi had opened the scoring with a penalty of his own in the 52nd minute. The result kept alive Real’s slim hopes of wrestling the La Liga title back from Barcelona who currently have an 8 point lead over their fierce rivals. The sides will meet again on Wednesday in the final of the Copa del Rey and also in the semi-finals of the Champions League, so let’s hope for more penalty kick action like we saw over the weekend.

In case you are wondering why I am using Twitter, it is simply because Spotflick currently has no way of verifying who the player who posts high scores is, but entering your Twitter user name means you can be contacted if you win the prize.

Don’t have a Twitter account? Then click here to go to Twitter and set up your account for free. All you need is a valid e-mail address. Don’t worry if don’t fancy the whole Tweeting thing. Signing up doesn’t mean that you then have to tell everyone about every amusing shaped vegetable or bowel movement you experience every day. You can just use your account to enter the competition and then never tweet again. Or you might find you like it so feel free to fill your boots after the competition is over.

The competition will start at midnight GMT on 11th March when the High Scores table will be reset allowing you to easily see who is currently in the lead. The competition will end at midnight GMT on 17th April 2011, the same day as the El Clásico derby match between Real Madrid and Barcelona at the Bernabéu in Madrid.

The winner will be contacted on Monday 18th April by direct message on Twitter. In the event of a tie the people with the top scores will be contacted by direct message on Twitter and terms of the tie break will be discussed.

Carling Nations Cup Kicks Off

Posted by adminNo CommentsFeb 09, 2011

The Carling Nations Cup kicked off last night in Dublin, with Giovanni Trapattoni’s Ireland taking on Gary Speed’s Wales, in what was the former Welsh internationals first game as gaffer of the Taffs. And it don’t go according to plan for the former Leeds Utd, Everton, Newcastle, Bolton and Sheffield Utd great. Wales went down 3-0 to the Italian Irish, with goals from Gibson, Duff and Fahey doing the damage.

It was a good start to what promises to be a very interesting tournament, involving all of the home nations, except England of course, as they would rather play Denmark. Probably due to Fabio’s desire to sneek a cheeky visit to Legoland in after the game.

But despite England’s absence we can still expect a great tournament with Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and the Republic of Ireland battling it out for the title of the best team in the British Isles and Ireland, besides England. Maybe England were afraid of another humbling at the hands of Northern Ireland like they did in the 2006 World Cup Qualifier in Belfast.

Northern Ireland begin the defence of their British Home Nations Championship crown this evening against Scotland, so here’s hoping that Norn Iron can relive the glory days of 1983-84 when they last brought the title back to Belfast.

Get ready for the Euro 2012 Qualifiers

Posted by adminNo CommentsSep 03, 2010

But what better day to launch the new version of Spotflick – the Penalty Shoot Out Game for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad – than the first day of the European Qualifiers!

Spotflick Logo Penalty Shoot Out game

Today sees the first round of games in the Road to Euro 2012. It is a chance for teams to gain redemption for a poor World Cup (I’m looking in your general direction Fabio) and a chance for teams that didn’t make it to South Africa to try and book their place in Poland and Ukraine in two years time.

England Bulgaria Spotflick Penalty Shoot Out Game

England begin their Euro 2012 Qualification campaign by hosting Bulgaria, with Fabio Capello only making three changes to the side that had their pants pulled down so emphatically against Germany in the World Cup. The impressive Joe Hart replaces David James between the sticks and Phil Jagielka and Theo Walcott are in for John Terry and Frank Lampard. Bulgaria, ranked 43rd in the world, will fancy their chances at upsetting an England team that will still be reeling from their dismal performance in South Africa. But now that Manchester United’s Dimitar Berbatov has retired from international football, England would hope to get their European campaign off to the perfect start with a win, so the chat about being crowned Euro Champs in 2012 can start in earnest.

Scotland Lithuania Spotflick Penalty Shoot Out Game

In Group I Scotland face a tricky away trip to Lithuania but must come away with a win if they are to stand any chance of qualifying for the finals. Scotland manager Craig Levein is under pressure to get his Scotland career officially underway after his team were given a good going over against Sweden in a friendly last month. The Lithuania game is Levein’s first competitive game in charge of his country and it looks like he will have a job on getting Scotland to the Euro’s. Group I also includes Spain and the Czech Republic, so Scotland must put the supposedly smaller nations like Lithuania (only ranked 11 places lower than them) to the sword and hope for some decent results at Hampden Park against the likes of the Spaniards. On a lighter note, former Evertonian David Weir will become the oldest ever player for Scotland, turning out at the tender age of 40. Well played that man!

Slovenia Northern Ireland Spotflick Penalty Shoot Out Game

Northern Ireland get their campaign under way in Slovenia and will hope to end the barren spell of over twenty years since qualification for a major tournament. Northern Ireland are in the tricky enough Group C, along with Slovenia (obviously) and Italy, Serbia, Estonia and the Faroe Islands. Slovenia will be looking to build on a decent performance in South Africa, where it was only a last minute Landon Donovan goal that prevented them from progressing to the knock out stages. Northern Ireland will be looking to David Healy to put aside his poor club form and find the spark that saw Norn Iron almost qualify for Euro 2008, duffing up Spain, Sweden and Denmark in the process. Glory Days! Let’s hope Nigel Worthington’s men can get their campaign off to a good start.

Armenia Ireland Spotflick Penalty Shoot Out Game

And the Republic of Ireland travel to Armenia aiming to put their ‘Hand of Gaul‘ disappointment behind them and qualify outright, avoiding any tricky play off ties in Paris with cheating Frenchmen. On paper this should be an easy victory for the Irish, with Armenia sitting a whopping 60 places below them in the world rankings. The Republic must fancy their chances of progressing from their group that consists of a lot of ia’s, meaning a fair few trips behind the Iron Curtain for the Irish boys. Macedonia, Russia and Slovakia also lie in wait for Ireland, with Andorra providing the only respite, but they shouldn’t provide much else in this tournament.

Sorry Wales, but I don’t have Montenegro in Spotflick so no Screenshot, but best of luck to the Welsh! It certainly promises to be a fantastic night of football, with other interesting ties like France v Belarus, with France looking to start a new era of the farce of their World Cup exploits, and Spain will not be too worried about kicking off the defence of their European crown against Liechtenstein. Could be a cricket score that one!

So if you are travelling to any of the games, why not download your copy of Spotflick – the Penalty Kick Game for the iPhone or iPod Touch – and make your trip a little bit more exciting with some animated spotflicking action. And if there are any penalties to be taken tonight make sure your team is ready for them by making sure that they are top of the Spotflick Cup Table.(Oddly enough England are currently sitting joint top of the table with Italy. At least if their team can’t take penalties their fans seem to be able to manage!)

Good luck to all of the home nations tonight and enjoy your newly updated Spotflicks!

Torres gets Shirty

Posted by admin1 CommentAug 03, 2010

Despite Liverpool not taking home any silverware last season, it turns out that Fernando Torres and Stevie Gerrard topped a crucially important list in the Premier League season of 2009/2010 -

‘Who had their name printed on a shirt the most?’

In what was a season filled with regret and turmoil behind the scenes at Anfield, with Rafa Benitez not knowing if his job was safe and Hicks and Gillett just doing whatever it is that they do, it is some consolation for the club to have topped such a prestigious poll.

Torres

But with transfer talk rife about both Torres and Stevie G moving on from Liverpool after the departure of Benitez, it could mean that there are some tough times ahead for the red half of Merseyside.

The full list of the Top 10 names printed on shirts in the 2009/2010 season is:

  1. Torres
  2. Gerrard
  3. Rooney
  4. Fabregas
  5. Arshavin
  6. Lampard
  7. Drogba
  8. Owen
  9. Carragher
  10. Tevez

I’m surprised there was no spot on the top 10 list for Hull City’s Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink. JJB Sports across Hull must have been rubbing their hands together with delight when he was signed. But sports stores across the country have had a busy time since Torres arrived in the UK. He also topped the poll in the 2008/2009 season and was third in 2007/2008.

Let’s hope he can put an indifferent World Cup behind him and put in another good shift this season, whatever club he plays for. And if you are wanting to get yourself in the mood for the start of the football season then there is no better way than with Spotflick – the penalty shoot out game for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Good Penalty, but even better Celebration!

Posted by adminNo CommentsJul 30, 2010

Just found this YouTube video from a football match in Iceland which I thought was worth a look. Good penalty kick, but it is the goal celebration that really catches the eye.

I have never tried to recreate a fish out of water, but that boy absolutely nails it. I wonder at what point in his life did he realise that he possessed this talent. Fair play to him. Surely he is worth a transfer to the Premiership just based on that talent alone. A few players have been bought for much less impressive displays than this.

There is no better way to practice your pens than with Spotflick – the Penalty Shoot Out game for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. Go to www.spotflick.com to find out more! But I think you will have to go some to come up a better celebration that the Icelandic boys!

Unbelievable Penalty Kick Tekkers!

Posted by admin4 CommentsJul 26, 2010

I just stumbled across this rather cheeky little penalty kick from the European Under 19 Championships. Ezequiel Calvente converted an audacious spotkick for Spain in their game against Italy. It is the best penalty kick I have seen outside of Spotflick – the penalty shoot out game for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad!

I tried to ignore the fact that the Spainard went down pretty easily for the penalty, as it tainted the goal a little but you can’t deny that it took some pretty big maracas to take a penalty like that as there is always the chance that you will do a Robert Pires and look like a right mook if you makes a mess of it.

Thanks to @rcammisola on Twitter for unearthing this little beauty. Follow him for some great insights, especially into Italian football.

Spotflick blowing its own Trumpet

Spotflick the Penalty Shoot Out Game for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad decided to jump on the World Cup band-wagon and brand itself on an item that has become one of the most talked about features of the World Cup. No not Larissa Riquelme’s chest, or Diego Maradona’s jewelry, or even Robbie Earle’s missing tickets. But rather the good old Vuvuzela.

Vuvuzela player South Africa World Cup Spotflick

In case you had been wondering what the strange noise was in the stadium during every football match at the World Cup, I can confirm that it wasn’t a swarm of killer bees but in fact it was a swarm of vuvuzela tooting football fans. The vuvuzela has become one of the most talked about horns of this World Cup, even more than Iker Casillas and John Terry’s respective horns. So it seemed only right that the best World Cup Penalty Shoot Out Game – Spotflick – should have a few branded vuvuzela’s. If you want to get yourself a copy of Spotflick head on over to iTunes where you can not only get Spotflick but you can also get Spotflick Lite – the free penalty shoot out game!
